This is in response to the picture below and a story about Jamaicans embracing solar power.

Jaqueline Hazelton is an adjunct in an international studies program at Stanford, which is terrifying.

I settled on a clip from the (incredible) doc Sly Lives! (watch it now on Hulu if you haven't.) I think it's the most transparent commentary I ever heard from D'Angelo; it's about Sly, but it's really about him.

My plan was to grab a whole different clip, but this one felt right.

Man, I loved some damn Diane Keaton.

A solid broad. Self-possessed, effortless style, never felt like she took herself too seriously.

We lost a real one.

I hope that the call coming from inside the leftist house changes some hearts and minds, but I doubt it, bc their absolute belief in the fact that their philosophical grandstanding puts them on the side of right keeps them warm at night.

This thread also speaks to why I'm spending less time on 🦋... I can't with the performative outrage and rightousness coupled with the thinly veiled racism of white leftists in large doses anymore. And they come elbowing their way into conversations here the same way the magas did on X.

These posts from @andr3wsky.bsky.social on threads (I checked to see if he also posted here but he didn't) were actually hard to read, because Black folks have said this *so* often and been argued *down* about it, reading someone say it as a 💡 feels damn near insulting. But maybe ppl will listen

Bringing this picture of his mom to his swearing in (and being sworn in in times square on NYE which is NOT what we do here) is when I knew he was gonna go full "er" in office and he ain't prove me wrong one time.

what show is this? Cause the people in there are quiet and captivated!

Du Bois did NOT say this. Vann Newkirk said this.

We're celebrating 52 years of hip hop this week as part of #BlackMusicSummer. The posse cut used to be an epic event, whether it was folks from the same crew or just artists who rocked with each other.

What's your ultimate posse cut? (And feel free to add why)!

Aug 11th was the 52nd anniversary of Cindy Campbell's back-to-school jam, where her big brother DJ Kool Herc looped break beats using a two turntable set up.

In honor of hip hop's birthday, share the song(s) you would start with if you were teaching hip hop 101. (And why??)

It was such a great opportunity for acts to showcase their versatility.

It was such a key part of the show, they released the soundtrack album "A Night at Natalie's"

Music supervisor James Mtume used the club as a platform to showcase emerging R&B acts and celebrate legends at the same time.

The fictional nightclub Natalie’s (Gladys Knight was Natalie) was the hottest spot in town, making even those of us who were blessed to frequent Ron Grant’s R&B showcases, Sugarbar, and Tillman’s (IYKYK) wish it was real.

New York Undercover’s early seasons were gonna deliver two things each episode: An ill ass cold open with the perfect hip hop track, and a perfectly nostalgic live R&B performance in the 3rd act and closing credits - usually a cover of a 70s or early 80s soul classic.
August 9, 2025 at 1:41 AM
Since we're talking about cover's this week, we gotta take a trip to Natalie's real quick.

This week is the battle royale of music opinions: Covers vs Originals. Now, let's all admit up front that opinions are usually heavily subjective and based on factors including age/era... but let's argue anyway :).

What cover (or covers) do you insist tops the original? (Post both!)
