Both directions? Nope, evolution is not a directional process with a single "forward" or "backward" direction. The term "devolution" is not a scientific concept; evolution simply describes change over time as species adapt to their specific environments.
Victorian nonsense where the arrow of progress or time or whatever,and platonic essences were all mixed in and applied to everything. Try explaining to someone that evolution can work in "both" directions. Evidence doesn't seem to work.
