The chamber has been hot and loud and full of people for hours. I am not sure how many have passed but the musicians have had two breaks and my cup of mead has been refilled for me more times than I can remember. These shoes are not designed for dancing or consecutive hours of wear and I have only said thirteen sentences to Dimitri since the ceremony ended, but he has been smiling a lot with his best smile, the one that is handsome and real, and whenever we look at each other at the same time from different places in this large and crowded room, it is like we are having a conversation. Tonight I have said more words out loud than I have said in my life. There are so many people to talk to and more to meet and others I am seeing for the first time since the war ended that I do not get to speak to Dedue until the musicians come back from their second break. The route I take to retreat from a long conversation leads me to where he is standing on the southeast balcony that overlooks the Tairngire river. He pretends he did not see me first, but I hold my gaze and he surrenders with a smile. Dedue knows these rituals well. He approaches me first as if he were requesting my presence instead of the other way around, then places his hand over his heart and bows low. He says “Your Majesty” and I say “Hi, Dedue.” As he rises, he tilts his palm toward me in a subtle motion, and I remember I am supposed to offer him my hand. His stubble tickles my skin through my glove when he kisses my knuckles. Even in my tall shoes, he has to bend very far to reach me. He looks handsome in his fine blue tunic and patterned robe, and the flowers in his hair and at his breast are beautiful. “Are you having fun?” I ask him. “Yes.” His eyes are soft and his jaw is not tensed, so I believe him. “It was a magnificent ceremony.” “Huh. I thought it was interesting, but way too long.” For some reason this breaks his guard and he laughs, which makes me smile. “Forgive me,” he says anyway. “Your candor is—It puts me at ease.” I don’t say anything. I just smile at him and he smiles back at me, and we turn around to check on everybody else. Inside another song has started. Outside it is quiet and the breeze is cool. My dress is thick and trimmed with soft white fur, and it allows ample movement despite having many layers and being heavily embroidered. Dedue must catch me touching the lining of the cuff, because he asks me, “Is the cold too much?” “Not at all.” He nods, then nods again toward the west side of the chamber. I glance at the circle there and see Dimitri spin closer and away again as he dances with someone I met tonight—Ingrid’s cousin whose name I have already forgotten. It makes me happy to see Dimitri. I thank Dedue by saying nothing. It is very very nice to be still and quiet. The music and lights were starting to hurt my eyes and I know that I will be drunk if I have another full cup of mead. But I like being out here with Dedue and I like getting to watch Dimitri dance. He was awkward and stumbled a lot at first, but now that he is remembering the steps he is agile and graceful, and when he laughs he looks like a boy in a man’s frame. When I look at him it is like I can still feel his hand on mine and the fibers of the cord that bound us together, and between the thought and the sight and the lingering sensation it is easy to ignore my headache. “To be candid—if I may.” I turn to Dedue, but he is still watching Dimitri, who is now on the edge of the circle and gesturing for Felix to come dance. His plea will work. It always does. “Of course,” I tell Dedue. “Always.” Dedue makes an appreciative sound. “I wish to congratulate you in earnest—and to thank you. That His Majesty could be happy… It is a fine sight. And it is thanks to you.” My cheeks feel hot in a nice way. I touch my ring. “I like him.” “That bodes well,” he says, and his face does something pleasant when I laugh. “It is customary in Fódlan as it is in Duscur to give a benediction to the newly wed,” he continues after a moment. “I regret I am not good at them. The difficulty in your lives is not at an end; another is beginning. But if there exists someone who could weather the worst of it at his side, who could be not just shelter, but a guiding light to see him through—it is you.” He has never spoken to me like this. His words are so kind and I cannot decide how to respond. In the end I go with, “Thank you.” Dedue nods, which means that I responded correctly. We keep watching the dancers and I keep thinking about his words until he says, “I also wish to make a request.” I blink. My eyes hurt, and my chest feels strange. This and the mead distract me from inquiring further. “Anything,” I say instead, and he glances down at me. “Be his friend.” The way he says it makes the strange feeling in my chest grow warmer and warmer, until it is hot, until it hurts. I need to hold my gaze, but Dedue is getting harder to look at, shattering in and out of himself in fragments. I know some of them. The rest I see. I see him and him and him and all he has done, would do if he could, if he were someone else, if he were me. [I see what I do to him. I don’t like what I see.] “I will,” I tell all of him, with all of me that I am.
