“Previously, I’d go to my boss and say ‘Hey, I need a raise,’ and he’d laugh in my face,” Thompson said. “But if I see all my brothers and sisters with Stand Up KC behind me, standing with me in solidarity asking for that raise, it’s no longer an ask — it’s a demand.”

#GVerse Chicago turnout this morning was INSANE.

Thousands hit the streets demanding justice for Alex Pretti and calling out the federal crackdown that killed him.

This isn’t “local unrest” anymore. It’s national.

People are right to be incensed, but there are more names to uplift. ICE killed an immigrant man named Silverio Villegas González in Chicagoland. He had children. Victor Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Minneapolis and died in ICE custody on January 14. Their names deserve to be repeated, too.

We are now witnessing—some of us in incredulous horror—what happens when a society confuses authority with innocence and violence with virtue. We have built legal doctrines that reward escalation. We have granted weapons to institutions without demanding restraint.

Every American citizen is apparently worried about what it will cost them personally to go on a general strike.

When what they should be asking is what it will cost them—and the world entire—if they don't.

You've run out of time, America. ICE was just the appetizer. This is the main course:

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
