lol I feel that
I remember getting "post high school" grades on the reading portions of the Stanford 9 tests (which I think are called the Stanford 10 now, lol)
"sounding it out" was also what my Montessori school teachers encouraged.
definitely thankful my parents started me on phonics at ~3 yrs

anyway, needless to say, at the Bad School I was one of *two* students who could read worth a damn, and at the Less Bad School I was still very ahead of my peers when it came to reading. as much as I'd enjoy the ego boost of "innate ability", it was def due to learning phonics lol
so yeah. phonics.

nevermind the grim implications of needing additional, private, at-home education with a commercial product because many schools were crap in my hometown, but hey
(tho IIRC the school my parents eventually settled on w me taught phonics. but I was well prepared by that time. 🤓)
