Very atmospheric and what a lovely cafe too. We are going to the Christmas market and have breakfast. Low calorie of course!

Few interwar pubs survive with original features. The Iron Duke has a unique story serving the troops during WW11 despite not being fully built. The bars have counters made from teak taken from the WW1 Battleship HMS Iron Duke and it was built by Lacons which was a huge employer in the town .

Not anything we can do now. They turned down a Michelin star operator and ignored enquiries from other local profitable operators. All we can hope is the restoration is good and all the original fittings are retained. It’s a beautiful pub

I don’t look at the press anymore. It was so corrupt. In fact it was a real eye opener dealing with the council and the lottery ! We know what went on sadly. However it’s the first time any building has been saved in GY and it was a community effort. I won’t ever go in but proud of our campaign

Did you see the Council quote in a press article, 94% wanted a pub with food, only 4% wanted a wet led pub? What a cynical manipulation of Qs & outcomes. Everyone wanted a pub of that size to do food, just not Zaks.

Yes the online consultation! Deliberately worded so no one could pick a pub serving food!! The public consultation held at 3 in the afternoon on a working day and the same day as the Norfolk show! We did have a battle and a half! It was shocking really.

Great article, lovely to be mentioned. Some amazing interwar pubs. Far too many have been lost. The Iron Duke has a wonderful story and AW Ecclestone was a truly gifted architect. The Lacons craftsmen built some amazing pubs and interiors most have been ripped out sadly. A few that are no more.

We hope so , it’s a massive missed opportunity to not use the pub’s wonderful history. At least we’ve for the moment headed off full Americanisation and an escape room. Who would think of such a ghastly business plan in the Iron Duke!

We can only hope that the pub will be faithfully restored and one day an experienced publican will be given the chance to take it on. I fail to see how Zaks will be a draw. Thank you as ever for all the support at least the pub is still here! GYBC wanted it gone.
