For the first time, I found some gray/silver hairs today. I highly suspect that a huge part of it is grief as I didn't have these before this summer (ik people do gray in their 30s so it's also not like thaaat odd), but idk if this is strange, I don't hate them.

Becoming a man, from the early stages of realising that you don’t align with girlhood to injecting yourself with testosterone and letting the “toxic drug of masculinity” destroy your “feminine purity” is much like slowly turning into a monster. The deepest core theme across every representation of transmasculinity, by us and not by us, is that of monsterization.

I'll also share this one, because IME a lot of people don't understand the treatment of "masculine young girls", so make of this what you will: (it is from "To Kill Your Womanhood)
It is often said of the tomboy that she is accepted socially, but what people often forget about the tomboy is that she has an expiry date. Even narratives featuring tomboys end with her growing into a more feminine presentation. The idea of the tomboy is something of childhood–you grow out of it and become a woman. Transmasculinity is viewed in a similar sense, as is lesbianism, these are things that you are supposed to grow out of and accept your place in heteronormative society.

(this is from "Assigned Invisible at Birth") I'm glad Serano provides data to debunk the idea that we have a growing wave of young trans boys, there's a lot of social factors that when cis people research this, they often don't understand that may impact the data they gather
Important notes to make about this data is that it was collected from the parents, predominantly the mothers, of transgender children, in particular trans boys. These parents were recruited from gender critical websites, and while Littman collects data to prove and assert that these parents were pro gay and trans rights, these parents being on gender critical websites strongly implies that they were questioning their own children’s personal narratives. This study paints young trans boys as manipulating their mothers with suicide baiting, “playing the victim”, and lying to doctors to get access to transition care. It also frames transmasculinity as a “social contagion” and these “young girls” as being socially pressured into it by their peers. The conclusion argues for medical professionals to look to other solutions before transition care and to look at past trauma and mental health before taking young trans boys’ word on their own transness. This study has zero perspective from the trans youth in question. The most damning thing about this study is its own numbers. With over 80% of the subjects continuing to identify as trans, with only around 5-6% detransitioning, and the rest inconclusive (and we must take into consideration the impact of these trans youth not living in families that accept their trans identity)–Littman asserts that we must more strongly gatekeep transition care for the 5-6% of detransitioners, and yet this data has impacted how people view transmasculine people to this day. To offer another interpretation on the collected data from Littman’s study, and coming from a more personal place, the high rates of young trans boys having faced abuse or sexual trauma and being neurodivergent is a reflection on the treatment they face. In terms of being autistic or ADHD, you are often othered as a child, called slurs, and are often unable to relate to other children around you. I never felt quite human, especially as a child, there is an alienness to being neurodivergent that forces you to consider your place in society, including your place in gender roles. Autistic and ADHD children being forced so young to think about the role they are supposed to play, forces them to think about gender more, and how they do or do not relate to their assigned gender, obviously, this is a pipeline in self realising as a trans individual. The rates of abuse and sexual trauma imply that “young girls” who do not fit into the expectations of girlhood are more vulnerable to this sort of violence, but it is easier for the gender critical “feminist” to believe that the reason a “girl wants to be a boy” is because “she was sexually abused” and not that perhaps he was sexually abused as a form of regendering violence.

It is a unique and disheartening experience to be a trans man and see yourself in a historical figure, only to find that while all accounts of this figure point to transness, to the point where they cannot ignore his chosen masculine presentation, are laced with misgendering and dismissal of the possibility of his being trans. It makes me realise, somewhere deep in my bones, that if I were to die tomorrow, that this is how people would talk about me too.

I criticize the way some trans theorists talk about transmasc struggles, which some of you will love me for, and some of you will hate me for, so that'll be interesting.
To assume and argue that misogyny does not grow a new head aimed at transmasculine people is a dangerous level of ignorance. Blue Eye Samurai is a standout, nearly a masterpiece, and maybe in season two we will see Mizu’s masculinity written in a more empathetic sense, not tied to bloodlust or him becoming a monster, but simply part of who he is outside of his quest for vengeance. Or perhaps we will simply get more shots lingering on his naked form, to mock us for ever thinking that a woman could be a man, silly.

One of the most common ways that a “woman disguising as a man” is revealed to be “not a man” is through exposure of his body (I am using he/him pronouns for spite). The idea that this character is challenging misogynistic stereotypes by “being a badass woman” but simultaneously what is revealed to prove his womanlieness is the body he was born with. These stories give us characters living on the tight rope of forced femininity and chosen masculinity and yet the end game is often for their body to be exposed of not their own will and for them to be pulled from a chosen masculine expression to what is expected for a woman. It is often said of the tomboy that she is accepted socially, but what people often forget about the tomboy is that she has an expiry date. In the final act of Identity Crisis, Millander is arrested and reveals the truth of his story to Grissom. He talks about his childhood, about being raised as a girl while living as a boy when he could. His father’s death changed him, in his own words “a boy could have saved his father” and “if I got tough enough, no one would ever hurt me” in response to Grissom questioning why he identified with the aggressors. Millander expresses comfort in talking to Grissom about this, implying that no one else in his life would “hear it”. As he expresses comfort, eerie music plays, his comfort in talking about his transness is part of the horror. He escapes his arrest, goes to his childhood home, kills his mother and then commits suicide in the way that he staged his victims’. His last words in his suicide note recording are “I just can’t do it anymore, I’ve lost hope [gunshot].” He killed his mother with a knife through the chest, symbolically breaking her heart twice, I suppose. That’s what trans men do, I suppose, we break our mothers’ hearts by killing their daughters.

Another core tenet of antitransmasculinity is treating the body of a trans man as somehow not really male, as mutilated, and as though his body should be for others and not himself. His body exists in this story as a metaphor for progress and bridging masculinity and femininity, but also as an object to enact violence on. He doesn't get to be a man without experiencing the full "suffrage of women", and in forwarding those experiences, he doesn't get to be seen as or referred to as a man anyway. The justification I have commonly seen in positive reviews for this is that he is nonbinary, except that being nonbinary does not take away from his transmasculinity, it doesn't make him "basically still a woman", and treating nonbinary transmasculinity as a form of womanhood is a manipulative attempt to pull transmasculine people away from transition for the sake of a sisterhood based on oppression. If this view of feminism, the view that I believe is weaved throughout Frankissstein, cannot conceptualise a word in which women are not oppressed under patriarchy--then it is not feminism

alright, I've begun writing part one of "Trans men/mascs in storytelling", I've been making notes and logging info for months, so I'm hoping to have this out in a week or two, but yk, apologies if I don't
Of the 30 pieces of media we will discuss today, that to some extent feature transmasculinity: 20/30 feature a transmasculine lead character and/or centre transmasculine experiences (bearing in mind I have been specifically seeking out author diversity and media of this nature); 18/30 are created by people who are openly transmasculine; 21/30 have LESS than 100 ratings/reviews (at the time of my documentation, these numbers are obviously subject to change, and I hope after people read this, they do); 19/30 have LESS THAN 50; it bears repeating: 63% of the pieces of media that I’ve found and consumed for this project, that in some way feature transmasculinity, have less than 50 reviews/ratings. Many of these have been available for a year, or longer.
