Whether SNAP is cut off next month or not just the fear of not being able to feed yourself or your family is a deep harm.
Lifetime maximums pre ACA were deadly.
Before the ACA, I met a young woman, maybe in her early thirties, and she told me that she had no insurance because she had maxed out her insurance at the age of 17 with a bone marrow transplant!

i was young but i remember how my 19 y/old sibling couldn't get coverage bc he had a "pre-existing condition" (i.e. addiction) -- & therefore had no way to treat his "pre-existing condition"!!! health insurance companies could literally say "oh ur sick? not our problem, have fun being sick forever!"

Pregnancy was a pre existing condition.

It took me years to relax enough to tell a doctor all my symptoms because I was terrified that an insurance company would be like, “you had a bad reaction to ice cream in 2006, which means this is a pre-existing condition and no coverage for you.”
A lot of people aren't old enough to remember US Healthcare before the ACA.
It was a dark time.
-Pre-existing insurance-no coverage
-kids off parents plans at 18
-even workplace insurance could exclude pre existing conditions
-no insurance funded breast pumps

The least most politically engaged people I know are texting me before 8am to say, “we won’t forget.”

So I don’t know man.

Speaker Johnson has literally said he's "not promising anyone anything."

For once, I believe him.

It is very weird seeing my friends and family slowly start to realize we're not overreacting.
Read every word & share with everyone you know. This is real life here in Chicago. Americans need to know this grotesque reality & stand with us.
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

Gutted by the Dems caving after the blue-wave wins of last week? Sick & tired of us snatching defeat from the jaws of victory? I hear you! Might I suggest you calm yourself, relax, take a deep, cleansing breath... then see if this photo of 2 pandas cuddling is of any help.

Unless Johnson comes up with a legal way to keep the House on vacation, the only legal maneuver now is to swear in Adelita Grijalva (D) on Monday.

We shall see….🤔💭🧐

Yep I’m sure that’s their plan - take away Obamacare AND kids off your insurance at 18 instead of law 26 now ( I bet they’ll drop it to 16 like the bs they’re already starting to pull on taxes( dependents) etc

I have a fond memory of being an uninsured 20-something having to call and negotiate cash pricing to get a badly ingrown and infected toenail cut out. And then having to call and renegotiate when they billed me for 4x the price they quoted.

I remember.
I was uninsured and working restaurant jobs when I had an asthma attack that almost took me out.
My asthma was uncontrolled due to not being insured.
Made lots of ER trips.
Trips to the ER were more insane back then because uninsured people had to use the ER to access care. It would have cost MUCH less for them to see a PCP, but w/o coverage, they couldn't afford one. Hospitals didn't eat the costs of unpaid ER bills...they increased the cost of everything else.

The fights I had on the phone advocating for my employees' health coverage were outrageous. Parents who had kids with genetic syndromes. Older employees with cancer. Increasing the number of roadblocks to care was their strategy (that, and increasing the reserves they could invest and keep.)

Don’t forget lifetime maximums , even on employer plans. I would have been uninsurable by age 31 without ACA because of two hugely expensive medical emergencies. The only only reason I was able to have kids was ACA

-Carve outs for mental health care and caps/limits on coverage (which led to many people not getting mental health coverage)
-Carve outs and caps/limits for specific diagnoses (like HIV/Aids) which meant that people suffered and died without healthcare

I own a small business. I would never have been able to do so before ACA, because I wouldn't have been able to purchase individual healthcare. The individual insurance market was almost non-existent, and exorbitant.

ACA allows single women to own small businesses

I was alive back then but not yet super politically aware re insurance. What happened for people who needed dialysis, for example, or insulin, that kind of recurring thing? They’d go to the ER over and over til they just died, right?
