The only insight that the Blind Buffoon ever had was that people care about the places that they live. The fixation of ministers with metro mayors, reorganising local government into bigger units, and their continuing unwillingness to fund local government properly is an ongoing gift to Reform.

They are right. When Milton Keynes was started there were already pressures from (Labour) ministers to do mostly homes for owner-occupation. It fell to me to do forecasts to demonstrate how essential it was to have 50% low public rent. Proud of that

Well there might be a reason for that and that might even be related to RTB. Telegraph concerned that taxpayers are funding social housing but seemingly unconcerned that taxpayers funded RTB by selling public assets at less than market prices

Cycling wasn’t a “thing” in the Netherlands until the 70’s despite being flat a lot earlier than that. Perhaps it isn’t geography that makes people cycle.

When Callaghan became PM helped by Bernard Donahue & others in Number 10 he crafted a particular identity for himself to make an impact on the public. And it worked - he was more popular than Thatcher. That was 50 years ago and is light years ahead of the current steam age operation.
