no judgment to the people who ship Audrey and Dale, i know the actors have great chemistry, i just think that having him as someone who doesn't take advantage of Audrey's vulnerability and instead tells her that she needs a friend and then later saves her life is much more important to the story.

as well as Maddie, i've always thought of Audrey as meant to show what Laura's life could've been if she had had someone like Dale. if there had been an adult in Laura's life who had cared about her and not just taken advantage of her.

obviously Laura herself is a fictional character, but she is all too real in a way. the women and girls she represents are real. her story is true, even if the people in it don't exist. perhaps she is real in the way of a saint.
