Yeah. It's just like work place rules where you aren't allowed to disclose your salary. This is how discrimination/unfair pay/contracts thrive.
Also I feel bad for all the editors here. They are reading and accepting these great stories and then the publisher is just throwing that work away here.

Yeah. Like I don't think it's great to be like well if you argue back and forth with them for 10+ emails you might get something you will feel comfortable signing.

I don't think it is reasonable or fair to put short story writers through months and months of contract negotiation, and have them have to argue through every clause to get a fair deal.
This is unacceptable and my advice is not to submit there. I haven't in years.

And as Scott says, the boilerplate doesn't change. You have to have the info to know to ask what to change. This is extremely disrespectful of our time which is valuable. You could be writing a story instead of arguing about this but they don't care because they are scooping up rights.

The level of back and forth that this publisher is dragging writers back and forth through....is upsetting to me. Their contract over steps bounds and then they also don't care about "our" time. We don't get paid very much per word. And then here you're put through a gauntlet for a fair contract+
