I'm not an expert working with this type of data, but I'd take any kind of longitudinal study of self-reported data across different eras with a huge grain of salt

To the author's credit, they call this out in the last section titled 'Perhaps teens’ definition of “lonely” have changed over time'
Social media isn’t driving the teenage “loneliness epidemic”. Teenagers’ loneliness was the same in the 1970s,1980s, and 1990s long before anyone heard of TikTok or smartphones.

I recorded a few demos with my friend who is really talented on the cello!

If you know of anyone looking for live music in the DC area (coffeehouses, wineries, farmers markets, etc), let me know :)

I'd love to play out more this coming year

I normally hate when people say "and its not even close" but...
We are witnessing the most incompetent government in the history of our great country.

with Mamdani being about the same age as me and also having a multicultural identity with some Gujarati roots, it is surreal seeing someone "like me" succeed in American politics right now

also, very proud to be a northern Virginian today 💙

Ah, off-cycle election night. Time to start obsessively following the returns for a faraway candidate I just learned about an hour ago.

yesterday I had someone no-show a meeting (not too unusual!)... but their AI assistant showed up?

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

DC is being hit hard by the current administration between the ongoing shutdown, cuts to the federal workforce, and threats to SNAP. Donating to a local food bank is one of the most direct ways to help. No amount is too small!
Food Bank for the Washington, DC, Region | Capital Area Food Bank
The Capital Area Food serves the entire Washington, DC, metropolitan region, providing meals to thousands of people a day while also addressing the root causes of hunger.

SNAP is probably the most effective federal dollar we spend in terms of long term domestic economic outcomes.

that isn’t why you should support it; you should support it because it is a moral imperative to feed the hungry.

but it’s why even a growth-oriented ghoul shouldn’t oppose it.

it is an unwritten law of pickup basketball after age 30 that at least one person will comment "I haven't played in months, probably since the last time we all played together!"

I just set up a calendly for anyone who wants to chat -- sports analytics, creative coding, data viz, music in tech, whatever!

I've enjoyed connecting with people over the years and am always down to talk ideas, projects, or weird intersections between them :)

a good reminder to prefer open and interoperable tools over a vendor whose principles can change (or be revealed) overnight

history is full of people saying “you just don’t get it” about bad ideas

always be skeptical whenever something is framed as “you’re either all in or you're too ignorant to understand it”
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.
