We're joining the Heritage Fund UK in celebrating #HeritageTreasures!

Kew's Marianne North Gallery was completed in 1882, with much needed restoration work done on the Gallery and its paintings in 2008. The restoration was made possible in part with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund 🎨🖌️

The photograph shows the view from inside the rear gallery looking ahead towards the entrance doors through which streams light which reflects on the brown, black and orange tiles of the Gallery floor. Different woods can be seen set running around the lower panels of the Gallery walls above which runs a wooden rail set with intermittent labels describing the woods and paintings which are set in a colourful jigsaw fashion from mid height to high up on the wall.

The stunning Blue-throated Bee-eater (Merops viridis) 💚🐦

It is found in much of southeast Asia, in subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. Their diet consists mostly of bees, wasps, and dragonflies.

Back at work this week and I wanted to share something that's actually a cool history post and not just, like, anti-imperialist rage. This is a Buddhist 'dharani' amulet found in a tomb at Chang'an (modern Xi'an) in northern China. It was *printed* (probably by monks) circa 650-670 CE.
Round paper amulet blockprinted in black ink. Several rows of Sanskrit (I think?) text run in concentric circles around a central image of the Buddha, which is coloured with faded blue, yellow, and green inks. Some Chinese text has been handwritten in the central circle.

Just found this print from what is in English titled 'A New Herbal, or Historie of Plants' by Rembert Dodoens in mid-16th century showing 'Medica' which neatly shows the spiral pods of what we would call Medicago sativa sativa, Lucerne or Alfalfa, in photo on the right. 🤗
