The common drone fly (Eristalis tenax) is a classic example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species imitates a dangerous one to deceive predators. Though the drone fly is an insect, it mimics the appearance and behavior of a male honey bee (Apis mellifera), which possesses a painful sting. This deception allows the fly to avoid becoming a meal for insect-eating birds and other animals.
