Commissioned in 1865, right as the U.S. Civil War ended, the Statue of Liberty was originally designed holding broken chains in her left hand—this fact has been whitewashed from history b/c of the clear allusion to U.S. chattel slavery; the chains were replaced by the current tablet-like object. 🇺🇸
