NEW Blog Post: ‘What does mathematical reasoning look like?’

A few thoughts about why we should focus on the verbs, rather than the nouns, of mathematics.

Something I’m pondering… how often does math curricula/instruction encourage a habit of looking for patterns? Not just an MP, but a routine, from early math thru forever. #ITeachMath

For my book that is out soon, I asked my doc student Avery McNiff to draw comics based on research photos in classrooms with kids and teachers, so that we could show expression and action, but keep identities private. I absolutely love them. I am working on my website and just enjoying her work!

Genius math teacher move right here
I have all the name slots of my assignments read “Mathematician: ___” and, if a student remarks on it, I note that the dictionary definition of mathematician is “student of mathematics” so they all count.

There are no magic potions in education. The one low effort, high impact change I do believe would make a difference - tomorrow, with no financial cost - is moving from an adversarial & contradictory language of teaching & learning to a shared language of sense-making.

All learning, if it is to stick at all, requires student sense-making. It's why transmission & banking models are inherently flawed. Of course teachers can provide interesting content & scenarios as the stuff of sense-making, but the only place learning happens is in the mind of the learner.
So if we are teaching and assessing our kids on how much nonsense they can recall in a certain amount of time, then the guidance of this particular part of cognitive science is fundamental, but if our goal differs we must look elsewhere to supplement & support our practices.

Damn. I knew they would come for math next. I was just saying this to someone earlier today.

I highly recommend the Teaching Texas podcast series for an understanding of factors that contribute to these battles.

And treating students as empty vessels is simply not an accurate metaphor for learning. We can try to pretend otherwise, but nobody comes into formal education as a blank slate. Rather than focusing on what the brain does with nonsense, let's center the minds of learners in our pedagogy.
This is a good response to all those people pushing the narrative that we just need to teach skills with direct instruction in order for students to succeed in math. Treating students as empty vessels devoid of personality just demeans math for everyone.
