I often think about what voices my ocs may have and right now I've been imagining what voices my webcomic's main character may have. They range from maybe a deeper voiced salad fingers to a younger jack nicholson but with a english accent xD

Well, emailed my MP about the Online Safety Act and the motherfucker just did not address any of my concerns.

The Online Safety Act was passed on 26th of October 2023 to protect children online from accessing harmful material. On paper the idea is commendable, I and many others am very supportive of online safety to children, especially as someone who was a victim to online predators as a young age, but the actual effects of this act is causing more harm by censoring mass amounts of public information and infringing the privacy of users. The use of the identification technology using AI based facial recognition is heavily flawed and those with facial deformities or modifications have found it inaccessible for them to use. The use of credit cards for verification open the room up for identity theft. Why is it that the age of consent here is 16, yet children now can't look up sexual education to keep themselves safe? Teenagers will be sexually curious, that is just what everyone goes through, but now they can't even look up what was accessible and free information on how to keep themselves safe and protected. This isn't just to the topic of sex either, many things deemed 'mature' are information, supportive groups, and resources for subjects such as abuse, alcoholism, and even current world news. It is an unfortunate fact that there are countless children who are vulnerable to abuse, and many more are already aware of mature topics, and they should have the right to find the information and resources to help them. A student looking up the nude Greek statues for their History class shouldn't be barred from doing so. Wikipedia should not be censored. If I did not have the information I did as a vulnerable child, I would've been more susceptible to online abuse. Another example of censored information is anything to do with social activism, such as for Palestine. Since the UK has heavily outlawed protests to arrest anyone who simply holds up a sign and groups like Palestine Action has been deemed a terrorist organisation for simply throwing paint at property, there is now the threat of the government becoming more of a dictatorship as it threatens to destroy our free speech. Political dissent is not terrorism and giving the government more control on information as well as the identities of protestors opens more room to infringe on human rights of us all. Even if this was actually only centred around pornographic material, the fact that you have to give up private information for age verification opens the door to a lot of abuse and loopholes. Data breaches are becoming more common place in our world and many companies (not just pornographic ones) will sell your data online for advertisements and data brokers. Right now your private information can be on the deep web with data brokers using it for all sorts of shady things. A recent example is the app Tea, which was hacked and leaked the information of its many female users online that were now being used for revenge porn and identity theft. Tea is an app that was already controversial for its own reasons, but the data breach has opened these women to a lot of abuse. There is also the worrying fact that because these pornographic sites are implementing these blocks that require such personal information, anyone looking for pornography will look for places where they're easier to access and don't care about this law, such websites will have abusive and disturbing content that's now much more accessible due to the now legal examples being harder to access. Thank you for contacting me about the Online Safety Act. I am strongly in favour of free speech and agree that freedom of expression and the right to privacy are of crucial importance. I believe the Online Safety Act takes a proportionate approach by focusing on addressing the greatest risks of harm to users, while protecting freedom of expression. Protecting free speech should not stop us from tackling the growing epidemic of online harm. The safety of children should be at the foundation of our online world, and the age verification rules were introduced to ensure service providers protect children from harmful content, including pornography, and the promotion of suicide and self-harm. I am assured that safeguards for freedom of expression have been built in throughout the Online Safety Act. This will be particularly important for Ofcom - the regulator in charge of implementing the Act - as it makes enforcement decisions. To ensure the Act does not disproportionately harm content creators, it sets out the need for robust complaint systems on tech platforms in the case of accounts being suspended unfairly. In addition, Ofcom is legally required to ensure burdens on providers are proportionate to their risk factors, size, and capacity, with the online digital toolkit, aimed at helping smaller organisations with compliance. I hope that the safeguards in place help reassure you that protecting freedom of expression and the right to privacy is in place. Thank you once again for contacting me about this important issue.
