Hi, I'm Neil, a Linux advocate and Linux-only gamer, from Scotland. I'm also a techie - 20 years in Networking, and 10 in Cyber Security, so basically I speak fluent TLA. I also occasionally dabble with programming (Python mainly) and retro gaming too.
At this point, if you're still on Twitter/X, you're either a dipshit, a fascist, or a paedophile. Or all three. Actually likely all three.

I can't reply to this thread, but this what AutoFS was created for. Using fstab will cause problems if the network is down.

The sigh is well-earned though. AutoFS is complex and (argh!) there's no GUI. It's 2025 and Linux still can't easily map a remote drive permanently. It's really frustrating.
is the only way to map a samba share in mint permanently to edit /etc/fstab. ugh

Well, it's been a massive effort over the past couple of days, but My Bus Edinburgh has been updated to version 3.3 to fix the issues with displaying bus times that have plagued the app over the past few weeks.

Available now in the Google Play Store.

Any issues? Please let me know.

Hopefully the pebble that starts an avalanche. Because frankly, if your brand uses Twitter, I think less of that brand. Your brand is tainted, for me, by association.
This has always been a Bluesky-first campaign. But as of today, we will no longer be using Twitter. At all.

And I'm calling on other candidates to follow suit.

I think I'm going to look into Zen too. And there's also LibreWolf I suppose.

I worry about projects using Firefox as a base now though, given Mozilla's promise that they're going all in to make Firefox into an AI browser.

Big sigh. So disappointed with Mozilla.

Magnum's most recent bullshit. This is why Ben & Jerry, Magnum and Cornetto are dead to me.

Hilarious that Magnum claim that they're worried about their reputation.

This. This is what I'm trying really badly to say.
This is genuinely like 97% if this discourse.

> People crying for an alternative.

> You provide one

> "It's too hard, also [insert severely outdated negative information]

> You dispute said information

> "I don't wanna learn"

Every single time, these conversations are over exaggerated.

For example, this guy. He's better off on Windows.

I used to be the same. I'd threaten to "go back to windows" on forums when I thought I was being messed around. I wasn't being messed around - I was being educated not to expect an identical experience. It took years for that to sink in.
My usual ruling on "Linux guys" or similar replies to a complaint about something trying to engineer a switch is this.

If its "just use this, then get this and that, and make sure you do XYZ", I will ignore it.

There's multiple reasons I stayed with Windows for 25+ years.
i believe people when they say linux has gotten better in the last few years. what i'm skeptical of is that linux Guys have improved. i will not use an OS where i'm at high risk of someone calling me stupid for not liking some aspect of the experience. i must be allowed to hate the computer

Yep. Also, some of the replies in Lauren's thread show a spectacularly ironic lack of self awareness, talking down Linux because of their own bad experiences with it.

But they'll still get angry if you suggest they're better off on Windows.
the Linux Guy is an illusion and does not exist - you are interfacing with a very large group of Normal People who, unlike a corporation, cannot fire the expected percentage of Assholes from their ranks.
global adoption of linux gets pushed back by 6 years every time a Linux Guy starts talking at me like max headroom

Steam forums and reviews have always been a cesspit of racism and misogyny but this a new low.

If only someone *cough* @valvesoftware.com *cough* could do something.
Valve has now rejected my complaint, confirming that "I don't like muslims" is a valid reason to leave a negative review on a game on Steam

This is where we're at now.

I guess this explains man-child Sweeney's most recent twitter meltdown about how game stores shouldn't need to disclose if the game uses AI. He was trying to soften the reaction to this.

Ironically enough, "death by a thousand cuts" is exactly why people leave Windows.

Fun fact, Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux once ran a campaign to fix minor annoyances in their OS. They called it "100 Papercuts", which resonates here.

The more I use my Steamdeck, the more I love the entire idea. A handheld gaming console that's secretly a computer that has a functional OS already instealled and you can pretty seamlessly swap to. It's truly wonderful, unlike the gimmickry of installing Linux on gaming consoles of the past.

Was thinking about the Elden Ring "fight the pope" meme from a few months back, and was delighted to find this image, which features bonus "jesters"!

Original meme: "I've played so many JRPGs, if I walked into this room, I'd fight the pope. Probably take out his two healers first".
