When I started depts didn't have admins and extracting copy from them for the prospectus was really hard work that they resented. By the end it was a relatively well-oiled machine because most had admins.

I'm sure you're right about the increase in bureaucracy across the board. Particularly of the evaluation type, which can feel a terrible time waste when you just want to get in with your job.

I'm sure it's got a lot worse in the last few years with evaluations and teaching outcomes and what have you. But extracting copy from academics for the prospectuses was like pulling teeth before dept administrators came along.

Thinking they could do their jobs without us. No prospectus or website means no students means no income means no academic job. I'm surprised by how furious it made me, even now.

Honestly, people are nuts. We have someone local who throws ENTIRE loaves of sourdough bread into the flowerbeds in the park.
