Loves words and people—but in an introvert kind of way. Author of THE PLACE WE MAKE, a Sojourners Best Book of 2023.
Christians around the country are fasting and praying for our nation on the first Saturday of every month. Last month we prayed for immigrants and refugees.

Today, please join us in praying for health care and protection for the sick and disabled:

A new website created by about a dozen federal employees, called “We the Builders,” aims to be a secure outlet for government workers to share stories about how their workplaces are being impacted by DOGE, and a place to explain the real-world impact of its access to government tech systems.

Guys you should buy this book for many reasons one of which being that I am in it 😊
Calling comes from God and is confirmed by real people who really know us. (It doesn’t come from mimetic desires created by social media influencers.) My new book is in this very topic: You Have a Calling. Available now for preorder.

With ICE raids set to begin Tuesday, I keep thinking about the sign we have up outside our country—Emma Lazarus’ poem on the plaque on the Statue of Liberty.

Seeing our land as a place of refuge has always been one of the best ideas America has ever had about ourselves.

Tonight I zoomed into a church hall 3,000 miles away where a roomful of people had chosen to spend an evening (in December, no less!) talking about my book. I don’t think I will get a better Christmas present this year.

The political climate has changed since I wrote this essay, but I still believe that America’s moral injury will not be healed until we pay the financial debt we owe to the descendants of the enslaved.

These days it seems the only things you can monger are fear and war, and as a society I think we ought to bring back mongering cheese and fish, at least.

Your annual reminder that Thanksgiving was first proclaimed an official holiday in the middle of the suffering and division of the Civil War. Lincoln’s proclamation is worth rereading, this year and every year.

Jesus did not call his followers to defend Christianity; he called them to defend the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed, and the hurting.

Stop wasting time being offended. Get to feeding, and healing, and peace making.

Last night we tried the fireplace in our new house.

In the time it took to fiddle with the flue, wonder if the chimney needed to warm before it would draw, fiddle with the smoke alarms, and then finally extinguish the fire—smoke poured into the house.

What do we do about the acrid smell now?
