"productivity" and "efficiency" are not even in the top 100 problems that need solving in software engineering.
I'm not foolish enough to believe that CEOs won't keep chasing these goals; but until, as a field, we are able to course correct this, things are going to keep deteriorating.

My biggest tip for coloring is think of it like an equation:
Decide your most important factors, what limits that, what draws attention to that, then build everything else around that.
