"But what's your real job?"
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

I'm nearing the end and somehow the mix for my favorite comics of 2025 list is only getting wilder.

Comics! Still incredibly awesome!
I'm well into my prep for THE SKTCHD AWRDS and at this point I think it's safe to say that my Comics of 2025 list will be the most eclectic it's ever been, which is really saying something coming off last year.

It's for a good reason: 2025 has been an amazing year for comics!

It's everybody's lowkey favorite type of episode of Off Panel this week, as it goes inside baseball on the direct market of comics with Lunar/DCBS head Christina Merkler, who discusses a weird (and good?) year in that space.

Plus: Thanksgiving Takes! And dumb theories!
This week on Off Panel, Christina Merkler — the co-owner of Lunar Distribution, Discount Comic Book Service, and InStockTrades — joins the show to talk about the, uh, weird year for comics distribution, how Lunar has adjusted, DCBS/InStockTrades' big years, how she's feeling about 2026, and more.

No comedian could come up with a funnier event concept than this. It’s like mad libs comprised of the most bizarre, deeply stupid “entertainment” things in the world right now.

There’s no way I’d watch, but my god, what a concept (I also only know who three of these people are).

It was a big month on Off Panel, my weekly comics interview podcast, so I wanted to recap its month for anyone who missed it.

Cartoonist @ericafails.bsky.social visited to talk about her past few years in comics, what she's learned from them, and her work on Harley & Ivy: Life & Crimes.

Just did this at my local comic shop, and I love how browsing unlocks ideas for you AND for others. I went for one thing for my nephew and ended up getting him two things (Assorted Crisis Events Vol. 1 and the DC: The New Frontier Compact Comics Edition).

Shopping in store! Always a delight!
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

This bit from Galaxy Quest’s IMDB trivia page has to be one of my favorite random tidbits about a movie ever. Alan Rickman! So dry! Yet so spicy!

My wife took this picture of me that either makes me look like a villainous uncle in a John Hughes movie or an extra in a Beastie Boys video and I kind of love it.

For DROME, I wanted a character who was mainly defined by color instead of linework. When I started the book, I wasn’t confident I’d be able to do it with my coloring skills, but hoped I would get good enough by the time the character made their appearance at the end of chapter two.

The Wednesday impulse buy at the comic shop is alive and well. Could not resist Banana Sioule because that cover rules and the interior art looks amazing too. Michaël Sanlaville has the juice.

It's been a big, weird, often quite bad year for me. But through it all, comics have been a constant, bringing me joy.

So, today, I wrote about ten things that made me thankful from the year in comics, including the support of everyone who subscribes to SKTCHD and/or back Off Panel on Patreon.
In a giant-sized edition of my weekly column, I wrote about ten things I'm thankful for from the year in comics, including the sheer power of stupid (complimentary), metronome comics, comic adventures, the support of peers, DC's big year, surprising art, and more.
