Today, I want to highlight Abdol Hossein Sardari, an Iranian diplomat whose story few people may know — but it should inspire anyone who cares about courage and conscience. I came across him while searching for Iranian heroes from history.

State Secret Police = GEheime STAatsPOlizei
If calling a state secret police agent a murderer for committing murder will lead to more murder by the state secret police, it sure seems like the problem is with the secret police
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."

Some legal context is clearly required.

1. 182 days is not the maximum, the period can be extended by the courts. There are clearly some cases where this is appropriate - you don’t let those accused of mass murder out if the investigation is taking time. /1
"The maximum time a prisoner can spend on remand is 182 days (six months). Yet Muraisi and Ahmed were arrested in November 2024, and are not due to be tried until June at the earliest, which means they will be remanded for 20 months."

Shameful.

Using imagery online of the shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, we’ve created an animated sequence which highlights the approximate positioning of officers and vehicles at the scene. The red dot represents the agent who fired the shots. Yellow dots are other agents who arrived at the scene.

I understand the pressures on the BBC, but Radio 4's coverage of the Minneapolis shooting is an example of "bad balance".

It's all "the Trump regime says she was a terrorist, but Democrats say it was murder".

The BBC has the footage. It doesn't have to treat truth and falsehood as equally valid.

New review of evidence finds the most-effective police crime prevention tends to be:

a) focused on very specific places (not people or neighbourhoods), and
b) tailored to preventing a *specific* type of crime.

⚠️ Broad-brush crime prevention generally doesn't work.
