Just an Alonzo Church guy living in Turing's world

I do physical design on CPU cores at one of those places near Boston

Linux enthusiast, not linux evangelist
I grabbed an S25 over the weekend cause the deals were nuts and this thing has a 3nm Snapdragon Elite!

Swear to god I'm getting Lord of the Rings Online working on this thing via x86 emulation and a dock

*portable, lol.

Thinking mostly of things like these portable emulator things that have taken off a bit

I use mine a lot, but for me it's a similar spot to portal gaming handhelds or cameras

Best device is the one you've got on you, and carrying additional devices is inconvenient, so you just end up using your smartphone

Ah, I'm speaking purely chronologically, not considering magnitude

You could maybe throw in the Council of Elrond, but it was in Frodo's possession the whole time, and no individual was directly offered / tried to claim it.

iirc the order is:
Gandalf (safe)
Bombadil (safe)
Galadriel (safe)
Boromir (perilous)
Faramir (more perilous)
Sam (in Mordor lol)
Golum (Smeagol?) (the most critical moment)

Kind of fudging political / spiritual / literal power together a bit

We get the big important speeches of resistance from Big Powerful characters like Galadriel and Gandalf, but Faramir in particular shows you don't need magic to be good.

That said, I do think this theme was weakened in the movies.

I kind of buy that, but I think it goes back to the same thing imo. Most people would fall for the ring!

Arguably, a core theme of the book is who doesn't and why. Jackson ironically knifes this further by excluding Bombadil of all characters.

You know, I was originally just gonna say city, but I wanted to make sure it was clear I wasn't talking about Chicago itself, haha

Totally agreed, that whole area is far more than just suburb.
November 23, 2025 at 11:56 PM
I've heard the take that Jackson couldn't do Faramir like this, because the audience just wouldn't be able to understand why he was this good.

First of all I don't believe that, second of all if that was the case, it's just because Jackson previously decided to do Aragorn wrong lol

Just skipping the entire bit where Beregond takes Pippin around the city is just yet another example of them doing Faramir dirty, tbh
November 23, 2025 at 10:09 PM
Hell yeah, best suburb

Trying to get to the top of the volcano is kind of tricky on anything even moderately fast or slippery

This could become a problem if you massively overbuilt in the original, but the visuals were so much cleaner it wasn't nearly as difficult
November 23, 2025 at 7:50 PM
Genuinely makes me feel insane that people like and use it lol
November 23, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Man it would've been funny if, during the blowback to cryptocurrency, the thought "see, crypto is bad, you have to roll your own crypto" got into peoples' heads
November 23, 2025 at 2:43 PM
18 months, geeze

I guess on the bright side, if money still exists, the homeserver market is gonna look real weird in 2 years
November 23, 2025 at 2:40 PM
Wait can we just do this? Can we just lie about shit?

Mark Cuban buy my CPU that lasts 100 years, you just have to run it at low voltage, 500mhz
