If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

A bad thing is unfolding at NIH this week: It looks like the Trump administration is trying to replace key civil servant scientific leaders, the Institute Directors, with political hires. These directors control the NIH budget, tens of billions.

My goodness, what an article. I mean, it might have made a bit more sense if they had taken the time to define what "ultraprocessed" is, but that would dilute the emotional impact.

I look forward to dissecting this with my next Health Psychology class in the spring

Just heard a @springernature.com journal is requiring authors to pay for open access (~$5k) to submit an invited paper if they want to be compliant with the new NIH policy.

If that's how Springer is planning to handle things going forward, I know of a number of journals I will no longer submit to.

my favourite thing about the APS Rising Star programme is that you only get to be a former APS Rising Star if you currently pay APS dues

I don't, so I'm not on the list anymore. god-tier level of pettiness, i respect it

I have to keep this deliberately vague, but this is a total disaster for academic research.

And imposing it so suddenly is just cruel. I’ve got friends scrambling to get back to the US before midnight tonight. Do you know how hard that is to do on 36 hours of notice?
Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in blow to tech
The Trump administration said on Friday it would ask companies to pay $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas, prompting some big tech companies to warn visa holders to stay in the U.S. or quickly return.

subacute sclerosing panencephalitis can occur from 2-10 years after acute infection.

This is why we vaccinate. The child was too young to receive the vaccine, but if everyone else does their part we all but eradicate the disease
