for me, China Miéville picked up Barker's baton and ran with it, doing the sort of expansive world-building and thematically heavy weird fiction exploration that Barker's work never quite fulfilled
feel like nobody ever talks about those early 90s fantasy epics by Clive Barker anymore — there was a time as a kid when I was convinced THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW was the best book ever

no clue if it holds up

Cannot tell you how much I learned from Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. Possibly the single most instructive work for me in terms of realizing what one can do with words.
One of the giants. I’d just reread Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead for roughly the hundredth time. The thing that struck me is his work is never diminished by familiarity, that on the hundredth read I’d still gasp, stop breathing at the wit and depth. www.theguardian.com/stage/2025/n...
Tom Stoppard, playwright of dazzling wit and playful erudition, dies aged 88
A theatrical sensation since the 1960s, whose dramas included Arcadia, The Real Thing and Leopoldstadt, Stoppard also had huge success as a screenwriter

To build on Phil’s recs, VELVET VAMPIRE is also a good double with DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS. Same year, similar plot structure, with Jeanne Dielman herself as the glamorously ageless Countess Bathory.
I asked folks what’s missing from The Terror Teletype and they said “movie recommendations!” and I said “okay fine!” so that’s now a thing.

The whole staff will chime in eventually, but I kicked it off this week with recs on films old and new:

Thinking about last year when I discovered my oven’s deadly wiring when it shorted and arced as I made the turkey. I’m thankful for many things, not being killed by my oven being one.

Every promo image from season 5 looks like Wet Hot American Summer. I cannot begin to think about taking this show at face value. Sam taking one for the team here.
Greetings, I have traveled through time from the year 2016 to remind you of something that has become increasingly difficult to believe in your time: Stranger Things used to be good.
It Might Be the Most Popular TV Show in the World. It Keeps Getting Worse and Worse.
There’s a pretty glaring problem with Stranger Things’ final season.

Oh
I have some friends that worked on it & apparently it was unfettered access to the worst people behaving badly & without filter (racist senators, Melania’s boyfriend drama, infighting, etc) so a good portion of that $40 million might just be hush money to insure the raw footage never escapes.
