By coincidence, one of the First World War service records I'm looking at today is a legit Tough Guy. A 9-year veteran of the Royal Navy whose profession is "athletic instructor" volunteered as a private in the Canadian Expeditionary force on Aug 12, 1914. Tattooed all over his arms and chest.

On this day, 110 years ago, my great grandad and his mates from 10th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) went over the top for the first time at Loos. He, with too many of his mates, is commemorated on the Loos Memorial to the Missing.
