It's true in that "front runner" rn is a proxy for "who has the most name recognition" and I think that's Newsom.
That said, he's by far the most aggressive of the 2028 candidates about generating that name recognition, so it's him winning a race that he's mostly running against himself currently.

No one's brought up that it's about personal information. It's an arms race to "beat" whatever AIs China has because they know how much personal info they collect. Just like with TikTok, the idea of that going outside the US scares the shit out of them because it threatens hegemonic control.
