Rook script is a phonetic syllabic alphabet for English as I speak it. It consists of 37 letters that clump into 3-story syllable piles, stringing together to spell English words
Is the th in “clothes” silent? I literally can’t tell

I thought this was a nice blog post. I’ll be mapping my own vowel space 🔜
The vowel space - english speech services
Vowels can be tricky to describe phonetically because they are points, or rather areas, within a continuous space. Any language will have a certain finite number of contrasting vowels, each of which m...

I realized something about words like “review” where it’s usually but not always a weak vowel in the first syllable

One time I filled a sheet of paper practicing the word Borges and my friend grabbed it and showed it to everyone like I was Jack Shining

Needs some work but handwriting would look more interesting if letters were slightly different sizes. Inspired by this shot from Oldboy

I just remembered why I have short strokes moving away from the direction of writing in vowels lol. The reason was not very good

How do you guys say mancala? Is it like mank-ala? Or like man-cala? Does one of them sound wrong?

I may change the spelling of the “ity” suffix from ə.tii to it.ii. There’s no overwhelming reason to prefer one or the other but having t in the coda would distinguish it from the aspirated t of “manatee”
Manatee and humanity sound different… but they’re not currently spelled different in rook script… I could do something about that maybe

Minuscule is so wild. We casually just have two alphabets and we’ve convinced ourselves we can hardly tell the difference

The song Mele Kalikimaka is interesting. It reminds me of that game where you literally translate a passage into a foreign language and back, but with phonotactics instead of semantics

Rolling this back a bit. I think maybe I’ll use something like this for titles of works but not for people or places. Basically it kind of looks like emphasis, which names don’t need
I think I will steal the interpunct capitalizer from Shavian, but use it to close capitalization as well, like quotation marks. And it’ll be a little circle like an Asian period. There will also be “capital letters” for abbreviations but they’ll mostly look like larger versions of normal letters
