Writing some C++, and I'm really missing the Rust syntax (default choice) of leaving off the extra parens in branches. That is, I've come to really like:

It's unclear there is any scientific value to this media campaign. The underlying study of this history, maybe, but a media campaign; no. OTOH, if ppl stigmatize others for having a particular medical condition shared with a historical figure, I don't think hiding those facts is the right solution.
As I told the CNN, without details and data it is not possible to assess the claims.

Holy crap! This looks awesome. We've been working toward something just like this (github.com/COMBINE-lab/...), and matchbox seems great; and in Rust! Perhaps we've been scooped, but this looks amazing either way!

Were I a politician who wanted to engineer recurring dividends for US citizens (not sold on this), I'd simply propose massively increasing federal research $ & slightly modifying licensing conditions on e.g. SBIR & related awards. This both maintains US competitivensss and generates massive return.

I also didn't read it as a defense. But it's also not a novel (or necessary) observation that bigoted people aren't terrible all the time. We *know* they have the capacity to be decent and simply refuse to do so. That's part of why it's so awful to experience.

Certainly, Franklin's early and tragic death eliminated her ability to help set the record straight on her significant contributions, and a personal perspective on Watson's anti-scientific mysoginy!
Contrary to popular belief, she was a huge part of what really was a team effort, but she should have had way bigger acknowledgement of the part she'd played. I wonder if her legacy would have been different if she hadn't died so tragically young?

Watson did untold and irreparable damage to science, to its practice, & to people (including talented and brilliant people) along the way whom he disfavored. He was undeniably racist and sexist. He was vehemently anti-Irish. He hurt many people & science's reputation. Yet, the below is still true 👇
If you believe either that Franklin discovered the double helix, and / or Watson and Crick stole her data, ask yourself how you know this. Then take a read of this article.

If you tell people a simplified story that conforms to their biases and preferences, and ignores important facts and critical complexities, and they'll believe and parrot it regardless of its accuracy. This seems true across so many areas; a true failure mode of human cognition.

I don't find it surprising at all. Historically, this is perfectly in line with what you'd expect. Political takeover, followed by erasure of legal protections and civil liberties and capture of the media. This is how hostile ends to civil governments play out, again and again.
In a way, I find the authoritarian takeover of our media system even more disturbing than the authoritarian takeover of our political system.
Our political system has been failing basically my entire adult life. But, the media system provided accountability and sort of worked. Now it’s collapsing.
