Misc musings of urban strategist…land use, retail, transpo, lighting(!), placemaking, real estate development, and people… with a few random acts of photography thrown in! (Finally making the move from Twitter… starting from scratch again!) views=my own
I’m always on the lookout for “Show, Don’t Tell” signage. This little neon tooth blade sign for 2nd floor dentist — sign A+

Hey look every North American city with extensive skywalk systems… when you make ground floor life active, people hang out and eat outside even when it’s below freezing.

Totally heart #ICA grocery herb scents wafting through the produce section—that, plus great lighting made me want to buy EVERYTHING.

Festive holiday door! (Old building + bright door = awesome — “historic color” standards are stupid)

Geometry in the city!

(Also, love how the kelvin range of various interior lights serves to make the building shapes dynamic against the night sky.)

Exterior lighting is super important in the north, where it gets dark before 4!

De-icing in MSP on way to #Duluth. #Winter #snow #ice #airport

I love taking urban photos in twilight (especially nautical twilight)! These are all great examples of welcoming & dramatic light.

Please note… bulbs in the 3000 k and lower range are yummy at this time of light. Blue-green high lumen/high kelvin monster bulbs are the opposite of what you want!

This weather always feels like home!!! Misty rainy winter day with the sound of drops hitting the window and spray flying off car tires in #Portland. #BridgeCity #Rain

Yum!!! Just gorgeous.

I’m sorry… what is this leftover cranberry sauce of which you speak?

Storefront in winter storm with winter Xmas theme! Very Meta. #Duluth #Downtown

#LakeSuperior #Duluth #Winter #Snow

A light dusting of snow coming down on the Lake Walk earlier today.

1 & 2) #CraftDistrict #Duluth was a mob of shoppers during snow storm, no skywalks in site! Very festive, communal and fun.

3) #DowntownDuluth in snow in the #skywalk area, not a lot of shoppers on the sidewalk.

4) #DowntownDuluth in snow, #HARTDistrict (no skywalk), better storefronts.

Whipped cream close up! Is there such a thing as too much pumpkin pie!?!

When your truck looks insane and huge, even in a Costco parking lot, then you know vehicle size is out of control. Also, not surprising that these folks taking a tank to grocery shop park like absolute jerks.

Happy bring out things you only cook with once a year holiday people! (Ricer in this house)

Madly working on night before Tgiving cooking! Cranberry sauce, check. Parcooked stuffing ready to bake, check. Cranberry shrub flavor marinating check. Pie shell par bake underway! Whew. Gotta get this pie done and then bed for me.

OH at Duluth coffee shop downtown:

Woman 1: “OH MY GOD, did you walk here?”

Woman 2: “Yah, I did, but I shouldn’t have…it was really slick.”

If you are a snow city and you train people to NOT walk downtown 5 months out of year, they won’t walk downtown 12 months of the year. #snowmanagement

6 pm and 10:30 pm!

There was more connection btwn inside & outside, so layering up and walking/streetcar-ing to a corner grocery store not a big deal. Now, we go from our airtight warm house to our airtight warm car, the walkable infrastructure is mostly gone (in #Duluth #MN), and many are winter walking weenies!

Have been thinking about this after a winter in #Duluth. In general, we were heartier about being outside, b/c there wasn’t as much difference between inside and outside. I mean, OG house, little insulation, single paned window in -10 degrees! It’s fucking cold anywhere near a window…
November 26, 2025 at 1:09 AM
In my downtown revitalization work, I get a lot of … “b/c weather” excuses.

We need to require awnings b/c rain, people can’t walk downtown in winter b/c snow, we have to have our storefront windows tinted pitch black so downtown looks like Mordor b/c sun, we can’t sit outside b/c too hot/cold…

Why I hate nuclear: humans are ding dongs and have wars, hide problems to avoid accountability, are only profit motivated, etc.

At local coffee shop reading Nuclear Watch Quarterly (as one does) and read these two gems: 1) pile of waste near MSP in Mississippi flood plain; 2) 200,000 barrels… +
