I found myself standing in the cold for hours, feet aching, waiting to see monks pass by. Why? Why were so many of us there?Because we’re exhausted. We’ve forgotten what love, compassion, and humanity look like in practice. We’ve been drowning in toxicity, enduring the worst of what society offers, until we’ve retreated behind locked doors, viewing each other through lenses of suspicion and distrust. Yet beneath that guardedness, we’re starving—desperate to witness genuine humanity.What could we possibly gain from watching a line of monks walk past? Everything.To remember what love looks like. To witness humility in motion. To capture a fleeting image of compassion made visible. Watching them is watching prayer with legs and heartbeat—love incarnate.Their race didn’t matter. Their religion didn’t matter. For so many of us, these Buddhist monks became the only living image of Christ we’ve encountered. Their faces radiate something we’ve only read about.I don’t know anyone who would walk a mile barefoot for me, much less 2,300 miles. Yet here they were—embodying the humility, grace, humanity, and compassion I’ve studied in scripture.
