Wanted to share the progress of my first cozy game I'm working on as I juggle 4.5 projects right now as a solo dev.

It's inspired by Rusty's Retirement, Stardew Valley, and eventually Satisfactory.

Been fun nailing the lighting in particular for this one, Lumen is so good. 😊😊😊

ℹ️ℹ️ℹ️ The biggest design mistake early #gamedev makes...

Designers are often proud of what they made, and the easiest trap to fall into is "I don't want a player to miss this".

Early player journey is often flooded w/ noise, only show the best parts early on. Breadcrumb the rest solo devs.

I mostly just wish I had good resources for royalty free assets that I know I could 100% use in my game. I've exclusively been making my own assets thus far.

I don't know about the rest of #gamedev... but I LOVE kitbash WIP stuff as a level designer who started in UGC like Halo Forge, we only had premade assets.

The process can be more exciting as it is inspiring to remember that everyone has a process too.

Helpful for the solo devs out there 💖💖💖
There might not be a devlog this week, a lot of what I've been doing is just kitbashing the ship interior which isn't really a video-worthy subject until it's done.

Could perhaps be a good time to actually switch to a bi-weekly schedule.

DO NOT BE AFRAID to post to the #SoloDev tag. Do what you need to do as a dev to complete and share your vision.

As you grow, you can always give credit and clarify. Don't let anxiety caused by potential gatekeepers keep you from growing 💖💖💖
Question to other #indie #gamedev peeps. I'm uncomfortable using the #solodev tag because although I am doing a majority of the work, I have so many amazing people supporting this project and helping me along the way through writing, correcting code, etc.

How do you feel about saying "Solo Dev"?

My solo dev journey has taken me down the route of UI. I've made both a hotbar and a radial menu for my farming game. I'm going to pretend it is still #ScreenshotSaturday for #gamedev visibility purposes lol

But I'm learning a lot about Unreal Engine's UMG for UI. 😅😅😅

My solo dev journey has taken me into the realm of UI. It's not great... but it's something.

Worked on a system today so I can 'theme' my assets quickly. First I create the crude model, then sets (roof piece, wall piece, etc.) and it'll generate the completed models based on the crude model. Allows me to create even more cool free #gameassets!

A game is more than your assets. And you can always upgrade your assets later. 💖💖💖

Yes you should give people credit in #gamedev.

But if you are using assets that someone has placed on a store, you can absolutely still call yourself a solo dev.

They didn't make assets for YOUR game, they made a resource for others. And solo dev is an individual leveraging existing resources.
