@sean Oh, boy. SoftBank selling its stake has got to be a canary-in-the-coal-mine moment for AI. They almost certainly wouldn’t do something like this without some kind of insider hints about what’s coming.

@raganwald I loved how one of the comments put it: “It’s like turning a crystal and seeing all the different ways it catches the light.”

“The Hunt” was a rough side quest, but it was a great story with good character development and voice acting.

@paninid This was discussed somewhat before Trump took office. What if Congress doesn’t return to session? Trump is allowed to appoint anyone he wants to certain positions, and they are allowed to hold those positions up to 2 years, I think, before Congress needs to approve them.

The #curl release on GitHub is now marked as "immutable" and there's even something they call "release attestation" there now.
Just remember that the curl canonical releases are the signed tarballs uploaded by me. Reproducible, so you can verify them at will to not contain bad things. Signed to […]

I just came across a data shard titled “Archived Conversation: Charlize Fury and Dakota Smith.” It was with some bodies surrounding a big, multi-wheeled armored vehicle in the Biotechnica Flats area. I’m pretty sure it’s a Mad Max: Fury Road reference.

@dale Two things about that package:
1) I’m friends with the “author” of that package, and I know his company didn’t fund its development directly.
2) That package is a set of interfaces created through a standards process with @phpfig, and the author was the editor of the PSR (like an RFC) […]

@dale Maybe our terminology is out of sync or something. Can you elaborate on what you mean by “paid maintainer,” “paid contribution,” and “volunteer?”

@dale We must operate in two completely different worlds. I can look at the packages in my `package.lock` or `composer.lock` files and very few of them are developed by paid maintainers.

@dale You could also look at who I work for and infer they must pay me for my open source contributions, but they do not. I do not do my open source work during business hours or on company resources.

@dale @aspensmonster I recommend checking out Nadia Eghbal’s book Working in Public: The Making and Maintenance of Open Source Software. She spent several years researching open source and its ecosystem, and she has a lot to say about lack of funding for maintainers.

@dale @aspensmonster The study you linked to was published in 2008, and it covers the Linux Kernel only.

@dale @aspensmonster That’s not been my experience. I would wager that most the Node, Composer, Pip, Gem, Crate, Go, etc. packages you find in use are not written by people paid by their companies to write it. I have been developing open source software for over 20 years, and there have been […]
