So many people get convinced it’s their fault. That they deserve to be poor. We gotta help folks kill that illusion so they feel okay asking for help.
Shame over poverty is such that people reflexively hide it. I had one pair of pants for years, and we lost our house to bankruptcy. But my mother and stepfather in the same town (with whom I didn't live) had no idea. So many people, barely hanging on, keeping it to themselves, now without food.

The thing I want to stress to people: Authors (and other artists you admire) don't *expect* you to be scintillating when you meet us, so don't worry about being clever. What *is* appreciated is if you're nice. Just be nice! Nice is good!
But what if I say something completely stupid?? My anxiety is too high to speak coherently when meeting an author. The most I can manage is something like "thank you for writing and sharing your work. It has become my friend and I brought it here for you to sign, please." Then I flee.

Had an idea where a sentient sword took on the traits of its various weilders and ends up having a crisis over all the schizo ideas swimming around its identity.
Too much like the sword of Truth imo, but at least I've come back around to where my reading journey kicked off.
