It does feel like we’re coming to a breaking point with Gen AI. Consumer backlash is strong, the companies aren’t profitable, and the slop classification has caught on in a way that CEOs can no longer ignore. Two of Colbert’s guests this week alone were talking about AI backlash and human made art.
Larian writing director says gen AI won't be used for the new Divinity game's writing

Says they tinkered at it for research, and it created work that was "at best" 3/10 in terms of quality, inferior to even his own worst human-written drafts

Larian went from being seen as the good peeps in the industry to "very questionable" in a matter of months it's insane.

It's like everytime some studio / publisher looks like it's going to stand for something, there are still good chances they'll end up going down a shitty road not long after.
Larian:

"we’ve decided to refrain from using genAI tools during concept art development"

"Trying" GenAI to "refine ideas faster" but won't generate assets without knowing data's origins and having consent; any in-game GenAI work will "be trained on data we own."

There's no surprise here, enshittification for greed was always going to come to that sort of products
“This could look like a user asking how much ibuprofen to take for a headache receiving a promoted ad for Advil in the chatbot’s response. Meanwhile, actual results on correct dosage may be brushed to the side, or buried under a mountain of ad text…”

This paper contains some good arguments about an issue that concerns me a lot when I hear my colleagues talking about LLM use in developing their research:

Whose ideas are you presenting as your own?

(Though the fatalist argument the authors make at the end of paper is disappointing/bizarre.)

Elon Musk’s new pay package could amount to $100B per year.

That's the same as 3.2 million cashiers’ paychecks combined.

It’s more than 1.4 million elementary school teachers’ paychecks.

It’s more than 2 million janitors’ paychecks.

Billionaire greed is out of control.

Fantastic thread on temporary audio assets in game dev
Audio (sound effects, music, and dialogue) has a weird relationship with temp assets, mostly because of issues revolving around human psychology.

Problem #1: How do you communicate that something you're hearing is temp?
The annoying thing about the "oh we left a placeholder" generative AI slop excuse is that that is EXACTLY NOT how you should be using placeholders. Anything "not obviously terrible with a panicked hurried half-awake glance" is getting shipped.

Hey everybody who ever loved a video game: take a moment right now and say a little prayer for Rebecca, to whom you owe much.
I never thought I’d get this wish. Odd seeing eulogies before I expire

1GB idle RAM for a messaging app, where did we let software engineering go this stupid (and it's coming from """Big Tech""")

Meta just killed native WhatsApp on Windows 11, now it opens WebView, uses 1GB RAM all the time
Windows 11 has just got a 'major' upgrade, and you're probably going to hate it because it uses 1-2GB RAM all the time.
