one of the things i like to do in my free time is to create short games about history and politics. here’s a few of them below. 👇
my favorite literary fiction sub-genre is, "i am a well-to-do writer (professor, novelist) who is consumed by feelings of ennui that are only resolved by cheating on my wife with a woman 20 years younger than me—but i feel bad about it, so maybe im not so bad after all"

people still talk about how bad TAZ: Graduation was five years later—and it is exceptionally bad—but the things that make it bad are more mundane than extraordinary.
to the extent that there are lessons to extract, it's on the perils of trying something for the first time in a v high-stakes setting

saw Heathers a few days ago and going in, i had this awful fear that this show that i loved as a kid, that i knew more from YouTube animatics than its actual staging, would be much less than i remembered
but nope! still had a blast. cast is great. songs great. audience excitement through the roof.

so, schumer has been shepherding this deal every step of the way but even if you take him at face value idk if anyone should be reassured by the concept of a senate minority leader who cannot control his own party to stop what he believes to be a catastrophic capitulation
America is in the midst of a Republican-made health care crisis—a crisis so severe, so urgent, and so devastating for American families that I cannot support a continuing resolution that fails to address it.
I am voting NO.

in terms of cognitive impairment, they say being in the senate is comparable to being kicked in the head by a horse every day

garland and biden pursued a policy of extreme deference toward the ringleaders of the Capitol Insurrection, pursuing prosecutions from the bottom up and delaying or minimizing legal action against Trump and members of Congress

very tight script that has a lot of fun playing with the conventions of a Predator film. i think my biggest complaint is that the heavy use of CGI often leaves scenes looking pretty flat. very little pops out of the frame.

One thing that researching this really drove home is that NYC mayors have always been weird, weird guys.

the historian stephen ambrose claims in his Nixon series that Richard Nixon helped popularize the flag pin because his aide H.R. Haldeman saw Robert Redford wearing a flag pin in "The Candidate" and thought Redford looked so good with it that he encouraged Nixon to do the same

I read as much fiction written by NYC mayors as I could, and my conclusion is that Eric Adams should write a crime thriller (for @literaryhub.bsky.social)
The NYC Mayor Fiction Canon (or why Adams should probably write a crime thriller).
I’m excited to be writing to you from here in Mayor-elect Mamdani’s New York City. After years of bad news and then worse news, and a lifetime of disappointing mayors, it’s a strange and pleasant f…

did you hear they want to build a data center in silent hill? they’re going to use the water from toluca lake. it’s gonna help people generate glossy, high res images of your dead wife.
silent hillification is just something that happens to small towns after so many years of deferred maintenance.
you stop paying for road repairs and then suddenly *boom* scary dogs leaping out of you from the fog.

stranger things kids don't look like kids, but they don't look old either. they look strangely ageless. you could tell me they're anywhere from their early 20s to their late 30s and i would believe you.

pretty close to canon for me. RFK leaves Vietnam, passes a supercharged version of Unruh's FAP while doing integration, and then just obliterates Reagan and Rockefeller as political forces. Entire Dixiecrat movement rendered pointless when George Wallace finishes third in his home state of Alabama.

gerdy troost—one of hitler’s favorite interior designers and architects—defends herself by insisting she did not see anything outside her studio except “bright and shining eyes and […] the most touching scenes.”
however, she was well-paid, influential. she benefited from concentration camp labor.
