Andrew Kadel @DrewKadel@social.coop My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen. Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

Un personnage mystérieux apparaît: Il est entièrement noir, sa carrure est très carrée, et il a une queue de cheval sur la tête ainsi que de petites bottes métalliques aux pieds. La silhouette: "Attends moi !" Boulet (qui a désormais un sac sur le dos et semble toujours autant stressé): "Qui es-tu ?" La silhouette (abasourdie): "Tu m'as... Oublié ?!" Boulet (confus): "Je... Ton visage m'est familier, mais..." La silhouette, heurtée, s'en retourne tristement: "Tant pis pour toi." Boulet, en panique: "Non ! Attends !" Boulet se réveille soudain dans son lit. Boulet est dans le train, l'air fatigué et agacé: "À chaque fois que je dois prendre un train, je me fais des rêves stressants. Et c'était quoi ce gros bonhomme tout noir ?" La matérialisation de son cerveau apparaît. Il porte une barbe blanche postiche. Le cerveau: "Aah, c'est une énigme !" Boulet: "Ok père Fouras. Ça voulait dire quoi ?" Le cerveau: "Aah, je suis ton ami aux bottes argentées que tu as laissé dans ton passé. Tu veux la clef de ce mystère ? Retrouve mon nom !" Boulet, téléphone (affichant "batterie:11%" dans une main, fouillant dans son sac de l'autre: "Purée mais pourquoi le cerveau fait des symboles de merde au lieu de DIRE simplement les choses ? J'ai autre chose à foutre que de décoder mes rêves !" Boulet (regardant au fond de son sac): "Bah merde, où est-ce que j'ai foutu mon ch..." Boulet affiche une expression de stress absolu tandis qu'il visualise son chargeur: une silhouette noire, carrée, avec ses petits picots argentés. Une flèche indique "Le chargeur, bien en évidence sur mon bureau pour ne pas l'oublier." La silhouette noire passe la tête en faisant un petit geste de la main en disant "Coucou." Texte off: "C'était: mon cerveau est un connard, épisode 26 498 876" On voit Boulet qui regarde tristement droit devant lui, la larme à l'œil et les mains posées sur les cuisses. Le cerveau: "Bravo ! Tu as trouvé, mais un peu tard... En guise de gage tu auras la musique de "Fort Boyard" coincée dans la tête pour le reste de la journée."

Celui que je n'ai jamais commencé. Texte off: J'avais plein de bonnes raisons dont je ne me souviens plus vraiment. Maintenant c'est trop tard. Plus le temps, plus l'envie, j'ai changé de style, de centres d'intérêt. Boulet (la vingtaine) est à son bureau en train de dessiner: "Non mais il faut d'abord que je passe le diplôme, et plus que je trouve un plan qui paie un peu..." Texte off: J'ai failli faire la même chose à 40 ans avec "Bolchoi Arena". Le projet stagnait sous forme de brouillon depuis deux ou trois ans. Et un jour, Lewis Trondheim m'a dit: Lewis (à table avec Boulet, regardant son carnet de brouillon): "Tu sais très bien que le moment idéal ne viendra jamais. Fais-le maintenant ou tu ne le feras jamais." Texte off: "Le soir même, j'ai appelé Aseyn pour lui proposer de dessiner la série, et là on termine le tome 3. COMMENCE TON GRAND PROJET AUJOURD'HUI - Le "moment idéal" n'arrivera jamais. (on voit Boulet et Aseyn lever les bras triomphalement) Texte off: Un jour, un de mes profs de dessin qui regardait mes BD a dit: Le prof (tenant un dessin cartoon de Boulet (la vingtaine) qui l'écoute): "Le problème quand tu ne t'inspires que de BD, c'est que c'est déjà codé" Le prof: "Le style en BD c'est quelqu'un qui a observé le réel et qui l'a simplifié, ramené vers un code qui va à l'essentiel. Si tu ne t'inspires que de ça, tu vas "coder du code", et comme pour une vidéo ré-enregistrée, perdre en qualité." On voit le même dessin de bonhomme se dégrader en trois "générations". B: "Mais tu l'as montré à des éditeurs ?" Ours: "Non pas encore, mais je..." B: "Mais de quoi tu te plains, alors ?" Ours: "Non mais je ne veux pas montrer un truc pas prêt et..." Texte: "C'est comme pour le "gros projet": tu ne seras JAMAIS prêt-e. Personne ne l'est. Il faut se débarrasser du syndrome de l'imposteur et se jeter à l'eau. Montre ton travail." On a souvent l'impression qu'on n'est rien, mais c'est simplement parce qu'on se compare au monde entier. (On voit une foule de gens qui marchent, un livre à la main, chacun pensant "Est-ce que quelqu'un a besoin de ce que je fais ?") Texte off: NE TE METS PAS TROP DE PRESSION, ce n'est pas une compétition. Réjouis-toi juste à l'idée qu'on a plein d'inspirations, de modèles à disposition. Et au besoin, déconnecte un peu si tu sens que ça te bloque. (on voit Boulet en train de dessiner, son téléphone sur off à côté de lui)
