If Labor is serious about fairness and intergenerational equity, we need to tax wealth and make billionaires pay their fair share.

Ending handouts to the extreme wealthy would free up billions for housing, cost-of-living relief and the services Australians rely on.

The Greens support gun safety, including a national gun buy-back and a national firearms registry, as the bare minimum to ensure we never see a tragedy of this magnitude in Australia again.

The Bondi tragedy was made possible by gun laws that are no longer fit for purpose.

Weapons manufacturers are exploiting legal loopholes to make massive profits.

Critical checks and balances are failing.

The Greens cannot support laws that could be weaponised to shut down legitimate political protest.

Labor must make it crystal clear that criticism of Israel’s actions, just like those of Russia, China or Australia will not be criminalised.

Excluding protections for people on the basis of religion ignores the fact both antisemitism and islamophobia are increasing in our communities.

These laws should protect everyone from hatred and discrimination, including the LGBTQ+ and disability communities.

The Greens have serious concerns about the proposed hate laws legislation, which we have shared with the government, and we will not support it in its current form.

We can’t combat hate if we don’t combat it for everyone.

Catastrophic flooding is now an annual event in Queensland. Climate change is heating the oceans, causing more frequent and extreme weather events.

It’s never been clearer: we must end new coal and gas, transition to renewables and invest in climate adaptation nationwide.

Queensland communities are reeling again from more devastating flooding. Homes, businesses and livestock have been lost, and towns are cut off.

With rain still falling in many parts of the state, the crisis is far from over. People need urgent support.

Rich private schools are gouging parents with huge fee increases while also pocketing millions a year in govt money – yet 98% of public schools don’t get their minimum funding.

Should Labor be pouring billions a year into the private system while public schools are underfunded?

Gun violence is not who we are.

Antisemitism is not who we are.

Demonising migrants is not who we are.

We must hold each other tightly in the coming days and weeks, and show care and compassion.

What was meant to be a joyous celebration is now a national heartbreak.

Jewish people have a right to safety. Antisemitism has no place in our community and this abhorrent attack is an attack on all of us.

It’s now clear tonight’s brutal gun violence was targeting the Jewish community, families gathering to celebrate the 1st night of Chanukah. This is reprehensible and intolerable.

My heart is with the Jewish community who are grieving loved ones, and feeling rocked and fearful.

Horrific violence in Bondi this evening, still a developing situation with a number of civilians shot and killed and ongoing warnings.

Please stay away from Bondi and listen to and follow police directions.

The Greens think it’s time the government stopped treating older people like pawns, and started ensuring that our parents and grandparents get the care and dignity they deserve.

Over a quarter of a million older Australians are in the queue waiting for aged care in total.

And at the same time, 1 in 3 big corporations in Australia get away with paying $0 in tax. That shows something is seriously wrong.

I wrote to the Health Minister Mark Butler earlier this week, urging him to end his government’s policy of shortages of Aged Care at today’s meeting of Health Ministers.

Thousands of older Australians are stranded right now in hospital beds due to a shortage of aged care.

Older Australians are dying waiting for care.

Labor and the Liberals are selling the care of our parents and grandparents off for private profits and releasing less care than people need each year.

In a wealthy country like ours, there’s no excuse for a crisis of aged care.

Labor’s draft laws were written to fast-track corporate profit.

Now, native forest logging will be included under Federal enviro laws, after being exempt for over two decades.

We’ve closed the loopholes for land clearing, giving protections to critical habitat & the reef.
