Reminder: Nobel-prize winning PCR (1983), used in basically all genetic tech today, was only possible because of extremophile bacterium discovered in 1964 in Yellowstone funded by a small ~$80k NSF grant with no obvious application at the time. #science 🧪

Non-profit journals are on the critical list.

The cause: academics obsession with the Nature brand, coupled with the APC $ model.

Some will argue it doesn’t matter (“all as bad as each other”). But the fact is undeniable and it’s good guys who put money back into science like COB who are losing..
Thanks @mitodynamics.bsky.social for the fun interview and for saying it like it is:

“…JCS and other community journals are being crushed by the mega profit-making journals, which just seem to proliferate and spit out new journals by the day…we must all make an effort to move away from this…”

You have 2 days left to comment (by May 23 at 11:59 pm)!

Go to the link if you don’t want your NSF or NIH program officers who took an oath to the constitution (not a political party) to instead be subject to the whims of a president and fired if they don’t “conform”.

🧪😲☝️ New data insight: A DOGE-fueled National Science Foundation has now terminated at least dozens of awards for **especially** bogus reasons.

Who this applies to: Terminated NSF grants first awarded BEFORE Nov 12, 2020.

This gets a bit wonky, but this is important, so let me explain. 🧵

🧪 The head of NSF's computer science directorate, Greg Hager, just resigned.

"My ability to carry out my vision, to provide a voice for computing research, and to provide authentic leadership to the community are diminished to the point that I can have more impact outside NSF than within it."
A Letter to the Computing Research Community from Greg Hager
Last week, CRA shared the news that Greg Hager would be stepping down as NSF Assistant Director for the CISE Directorate. As a follow-up to that announcement, we are sharing the following letter fr…

Bears repeating that Congress has not passed a budget or any other legislation that has asked the NSF to do this downsizing, they're dismantling the agency in anticipation of cuts that as of yet have no basis in law
NSF officials announced they are essentially abandoning the use of “rotators”— scientists on leave from academic positions who help the agency choose the best research to fund. NSF also plans to reduce the number of administrators classified as senior executive service employees. scim.ag/3EKnxmc
