I did the @apexmag.bsky.social flash fiction contest for a year and it ended up jump-starting my writing career (even though I didn't win it)

Rebecca and the read team does a great job. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to write flash fiction

Small life update: Kate got a new job and started this week. She gets to WFH, which I can say as an extreme wife guy - it's amazing.

Probably one of my favorite reads this year.

Prose that never apologizes. A narrative that never rushes or takes too long. Characters who are all people living their lives. Love. It.

This is so relevant to my day-to-day thinking at @hubcitypress.bsky.social. instead of being demoralized and saying, let AI do all the publishing work and pump out more slop to boost sales, our new focus is carefully curated + clearly human created. Hence the focus on short stories, novellas, etc.

In a time of slop, AI or not, it’s time to lean into niche communities and odd work by passionate weirdos with well-honed clarity of intention and craft

This is a really remarkable video essay on contemporary film and the theories of Laura Marks. It's making me think about movies in a new way.

The Shrike, the K'Chain Che'Malle from Malazan, and the stone statues from Between Two Fires.
What's your favourite monster/creature from literature? I'm thinking Tuunbaq from Dan Simmon's The Terror, the triffids from Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, the demon from M.R. James' Casting The Runes, Grendel, Pennywise, etc.

IT'S '6-7', COOPER. A GENERATION ALPHA TREND. WHAT THEY CALL A 'MAY-MAY'. IT'S AN ORPHANED SIGNIFIER, NO SIGNS ATTACHED. ONE COULD CALL IT DADAIST, BUT SOMME SAY IT'S TOO STUPID TO BE DADA. IT'S ANTI-MEANING, ANTI-HUMOUR, BUT DAMN IF THOSE KIDS DON'T FIND IT A CRACK-UP.
