Irene Rich winning the whole movie in Lubitsch's adaptation of LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN (1925).

Lubitsch and Oscar Wilde were a match made in heaven. Too many directors take a WITTY NUDGE NUDGE YA GET IT??? approach to Wilde and overdirect their performers. Lubitsch keeps it perfectly light.

Noooooo. Not Catherine O'Hara.

Genuinely, a comedy genius. No one approached a line or a scene the way she did. Brilliant from day one on SCTV. No matter how celebrated she was at times, I feel like it was never enough.

Absolute legend. I love her so much. I will miss her desperately.

We’re trying a new monthly format: on the last Wednesday of each month, we will release a few shortcuts: quick impressions of films, series, books, albums, games, or any other damn fine cups of culture that we’ve enjoyed this month, whether they are new or we only just got around to them now.
Shortcuts: January 2026
Considering how much we watch, read, listen to and play in any given month, it’s almost a bit sad that we only write about a fraction of these. So, starting this month, we’re trying a n…

Essential reading for anyone who cares about the presentation of classic film (or, indeed, get irked when subjects better filmed in landscape format are shot in portrait). Great article by @pamhutch.bsky.social

Hitchcock’s The Lodger has been turned into a vertical microdrama. What’s next – Psycho on Snapchat?
A silent-era classic has been reframed for the vertical scroll of phone screens. Is this innovation, sacrilege, or just another way to repackage cinema history?
