🌲🪨 Pine trees were one of the first to colonise Wirral after the last Ice Age. A useful hardwood, utilised by hunter gathers for spears, arrow shafts; nuts harvested for food and pine resin for glue 🏹🌰💚

🎉7 year anniversary #FindsFriday #FlintFriday! A notched flint scraper. Ubiquitous in the Stone Age and varied in size according to purpose. This one is thought to be Neolithic and forms part of the assemblage that began this project.

Is the Portable Antiquities Scheme a victim of it's own success? On Wirral the Museum of Liverpool and PAS FLO only accept finds from one person/small group of detectorists who claim all their finds were found at the farm at Clatterbridge, when they weren't! Bad archaeological practices #FindsFriday

🪨🦴A humanly worked Palaeolithic handaxe/awl made from animal bone. The piece has a small chip at the point, obviously it saw a lot of use. The knuckle end forms a natural handle. Shows ingenuity of using all parts of an animal

🌊Here comes the Irish Sea. The Western seacoast of Britain had a thriving maritime trade community during the Neolithic. They must have been expert and seasoned mariners. Navigating by the sun, moon and stars⛵☀️🌕🌃 #Maritime #Prehistory #Wirral #Neolithic

🪨A Neolithic scraper made from a breccia of Galena. It shows wear from use; perhaps a status implement. Galena is a sulphide mineral which has anti-microbial properties, which would have been useful in processing hides🐄🐐🐏

🪨🎨Staying with the theme of companion pieces, these two grey limestone implements are thought to be applicators of yellow ocrhe, with which they are stained on their left sides. Used to mark designs on human skin and/or animal hides. Ritual/ceremonial use.
