🌊 In 2012, CGD’s Aixue Hu showed how closing the Bering Strait in models affects Atlantic currents. Today, Science revisits this idea, asking if a giant dam could help keep Europe warm. Why it matters: ocean gateways, tipping points & bold ideas all collide. 🔗 lnkd.in/gS_sHikw

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong".

Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!

🌫 It was a foggy morning in the capital today.

🛰️From the satellite images, we can see low cloud and fog in the east of the South Island, stretching from Christchurch to lower parts of the North Island.

Today we have a beautiful example of a Kármán Vortex street to the west of the North Island.

This cloud pattern is generated downstream of Taranaki Maunga when wind, cloud and stability conditions are just right.

Windy Wellington, Indeed! ✨️✨️✨️
Hold onto your hats, Wellington! 💨

Those strong winds we’ve been expecting have finally hit the capital, and they’re not messing around.

Gusty conditions are being recorded across the city—so if you’re heading out, zip up that jacket, hang onto your umbrella (if you dare), and stay safe!

Super interesting to see. Looking forward!
Will summer 2025 end with no Greenland High regime days? Forecasts suggest it might: simonleewx.com/ecmwf_north_.... This would put 2025 in the company of 2024 and 2018, and in stark contrast to 2023 and 2019.
North American weather regimes for 2025 so far.

Summer has seen Pacific and Alaskan Ridge regimes exclusively, with no Greenland High or Pacific Trough. Some interesting apparent periodicity/recurrence to the PR since April. Little PT overall this year.

Wellington 4.8°C, with southerly reaching 44 km/h (average).
Cold, breezy and rainy weekend! ❄️🌧️☃️🍃
A southerly brings cooler temperatures this weekend with many eastern regions struggling to reach double digits. ❄
Parts of Christchurch will have a maximum temperature of 7°C.
Here we can see clouds moving in the southerly flow and sunshine on the West Coast which is sheltered by the Southern Alps.

A 'block' is developing southeast of New Zealand. A typical winter block (hopefully) bringing some nice weather to Wellington.

Though, southern hemisphere blocks are often 'less persistent' due to strong jet state!

🧐🛰️Interesting satellite observation in Taranaki this morning!

Taranaki Maunga is acting like a giant shield this morning—blocking low-level cloud rolling in from the south.
That means the northern side is soaking up the sunshine while the south stays cloudy. ☀️⛅🗻
