I have fantastic acceptance as a scientist, but I do and have faced discrimination. It's had an impact my career. But far less that others I know. Let's make #ScienceForAll

Defunding scientists for the nationality of who they co-author with or who they train.

One of the most radical attack on freedom of speech in US history. A far right nationalist destruction of US science. Such a shameful time to be an American that this racist stupidity has become mainstream.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure
Franklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player.

Maybe we should entertain some counterfactual history when trying to evaluate scientific genius?
Which discoveries would have been made only much later if a particular person would not have existed?
My money is on Barbara McClintock.
Also Gregor Mendel (quite literally rediscovered decades later).

Bluetorial-Jim Watson

I met Jim Watson a few times but did not know him well. However, I was greatly influenced by his book “The Double Helix”. He was a complicated human being with some very, very bad features, but some good contributions.

What follows is my personal perspective.
