How is the right wing reacting to the YIMBY movement?

Well, they can’t seem to decide between hating the urban poor or loving property rights.

Feel free to explain how blocking a project with 1,000 rental apartments on top of a SkyTrain station for not being affordable enough makes housing more affordable.
Yes, it does? Is this a neoliberal argument against price controls or something? Yikes.

Transitional housing is meant to be temporary, it’s implied in the name.

If we don’t reform our housing markets to allow for social mobility, how can we expect people to transition out of subsidized housing?

Being pro-housing-welfare but also NIMBY is contradictory.

Part of the hate for deregulation is because its association with Ronald Reagan.

But the thing is that CEQA is also the product of Ronald Reagan!
It will never cease to amaze me that a significant number of people (mostly people who imagine themselves to be on 'the left') have adopted the view that "deregulation" is categorically bad, regardless of the intent and/or practical consequences of the regulation in question.
Right now, today, a broadly accepted urban planning best practice is to exclusively zone for apartments near wide, high-traffic streets that produce noise, air, and particulate pollution while reserving quiet side streets for detached single family homes.

There is strength in acknowledging nuances.

This doesn’t mean you can remain uncommitted to anything important under the guise of ‘being nuanced’.

It’s alarming that empirical, attainable, and effective urbanist policy is being hampered by the addition of unjustified and controversial policy supported by only a handful of ideologues.

Your support for zoning reform shouldn’t be contingent on social housing.

Residents in San Francisco will complain that building housing will result in gentrification at every opportunity.

Mind you, the poor have already been priced out of the city without this feared construction.

It’s time for California to ignore this city, and let housing be built.

Good urban planning is crucial for decoupling growth from environmental destruction. Unfortunately, those who can’t imagine this relationship being broken are often perpetuating it.

De-growth has never been the answer.
