If I’d been shooting digital back in ‘84 (which didn’t exist) probably none of this would still be around. Make a point of printing your work, no matter the size. These were all scanned from just 6x4 prints.

All of the photos in this series were taken on an Olympus OM-30, with either an Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 or the 135mm f/2.8, loaned to me by my father for the trip. Next year, he gave me it to keep.

We did the entire trip driving an ‘83 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It was dark green, a bit like this one. I do have a photo of the car somewhere, but this isn’t it.

There is a landscaped avenue leading up to the steps, where it meets four large columns at the entrance. The building is on three floors, although only two can be seen clearly in this image due to foliage. On top of the main entrance are several smaller columns, supporting a large, black-coloured dome.

In this close range shot, the monument fills almost the entire frame, and the vertical striation on the cooled volcanic rock can clearly be seen. The foot of the tower is surrounded by pine trees. The board is crafted from natural wood, with the text burned-in, and there is a small picture of the tower at the top left corner. The text reads: WYOMING DEVILS TOWER Devils Tower National Monument, established September 24,1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt, was the country's first national monument. One of the earliest landmarks in the region, it was called Mateo Tepee, meaning Grizzly Bear Lodge, by the Indians who had several legends about its origin. Colonel Richard I. Dodge, with a U.S. Geological Survey party in 1875, probably gave the Tower its present name. This extraordinary mass of volcanic rock rises some 1200 feet above the Belle Fourche River. It was formed more than 60 million years ago by upwelling lava when the Black Hills uplift occurred. The columns were formed during the lava’s rapid cooling. A colour photograph of the Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming. The feature can be seen in the far distance, right in the centre of the frame. In the foreground are heavily wooded rolling hills, whilst the mid ground is largely prairie.
