I also think that beyond anything he wants there to be a satisfying story he's telling. He's said the reason the ending of Inglourious Basterds is what it is is because he realized that would be the best ending if he was writing pure fiction, and he shouldn't let real history change that.

Yeah, I'm not assuming Tarantino is a monster or anything. I'm assuming he's a brilliant filmmaker who makes art that says more than one thing and has complex viewpoints on things. He's also probably one of the braver filmmakers out there in terms of things he's willing to poke

It would very much track with what he said when MeToo went after him - he gladly and willingly participated in an evil system with open eyes and he regrets it but that's also what brought him to where he is now.

Yeah. But the two groups who are actively shown rejoicing in carnage are the Basterds (when Donny bashes a Nazi's skull in after that Nazi gets an honorable moment) and the Nazi high command (watching Zoller shoot Americans) and that is definitely a thing the movie does.

I'm not sure if he's just randomly doing shit in OATIH, he has some deep message that I can vaguely see, or if he's trolling, or if he's oblivious to what he's actually doing. OATIH preplexes me.

But in OATIH he casts many actors who were credibly accused of sexual assault, has Roman Polanski as an important character, has Cliff (who murdered his wife and lives alone in a trailer with a dog he trained to kill people) played by Brad Pitt in pure sex mode, and Manson as villain.

I think he sometimes does. In Inglourious Basterds he has Hitler chortling over a violent movie where his enemies get shot, in a clear "this is you, btw". He has a similar one in Django Unchained, where Candie delights in a mandingo match. I'm still conflicted about what he's doing in OATIH
