ME/CFS-afflicted novelist Philip Kazan. It’s better to burn out than it is to rust, and I wish somebody had told me that when I chose the rust option.

This is at the heart of it and it’s exactly these cheap tricks that make the current crop of smug, irritating populists so smug and irritating. I’m all for demolishing the super rich as an economic class but a) how? and b) by whom?

Happy 80th birthday to Neil Young. Thank you for soundtracking swathes of my life, old man.

This was my first Neil Young album, bought on a whim when I was 18 or so. Every single song is like a pin through the butterflies of memory.

This is my grandfather, Brigadier G. B. Vaughan-Hughes MC in 1919, aged 22/23, ‘somewhere in France,’ on Joey, his army mount. He bought Joey off the army and let him live a long and happy life in Wales. ‘Tommy,’ as grandpa was called, had entered the war early in 1915 as an 18-year-old 2nd Lt …1/
