My thoughts on the Zentreya outfit, meant to critique/teach.

As someone so entrenched in fashion, I feel the need to use this as an educational moment for all. As nervous as I am, it's important to address these things directly, for learning, transparency, and growth.

Firstly, fascism is so pervasive in clothing/fashion because that pervasiveness IS the point. The following is an extremely compressed historical summary. Mussolini deliberately wanted to create an "Italian Fashion" in order to spread the ideology across the world, with the “popularization” of the “Black Shirt” then trickling down into the uniforms of the Nazi party. Both dictators (Mussolini and Hitler) desired to create a fashion “industry” outside of French influence. This then evolved into the numerous variations in fascist uniform, because the point WAS and STILL IS to subsume everything, every aspect of life was integrated into the “ideal”. Therefore, these uniforms are not “harmless relics” of a “bygone era”, which is a gross glossing-over of the second world war, but a vehicle used to perpetuate bigoted, violent, and genocidal means of thought. By making them “fashionable” or rather, the more accurate term, marketable, then it becomes socially desirable, simplified: people want to be a part of it due to shared belief or even to wear the clothes to feel “included” and so on. It is the selling of thought through clothing/imagery. It is deliberately, purposefully designed to proliferate and spread itself. You cannot have an outfit connected to or referencing fascist ideals solely because "it looks cool", outside of being morally incorrect, that thought process lacks critical thinking. You've fallen into the very trap set for you. Whether an individual holds those same beliefs or not, wearing the clothing communicates that they do, THAT'S the issue. “If it walks like a duck” then becomes “If it dresses like a fascist, it is a fascist”, because that is what the outfit is communicating. The caps, coats, and their variations CANNOT be removed from the intention because the intent is literally woven into the clothing itself. Much like the media we consume, we have to approach our clothing critically, whether it's an outfit we actually wear or something we dress our characters in. When it comes to designing fashion or even just constructing an outfit from our own closets, we have to assess the WHY of what we are wearing and what our clothing is communicating to others. Granted this is barely touching the surface of the issue, fashion's issues with cultural appropriation, and overall problematic engagement with the world around it. That is to say we should not be paranoid of our clothing, or be so consumed by accidentally setting off dog whistles that we lose the joy of creating outfits, as aforementioned, we merely need to approach the topic of fashion and design from a critical angle, and do our due diligence to research use of shape, color, and accessories. screenshot of a tumblr post from user “wildmansters” The thing that really boils my potatoes about Al in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist. But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building. I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

spookybuttons thinking about the time they sent me a seven year old autistic patient to investigate if he was suffering abuse because in every psychological test he kept drawing awful monsters and I start the consultation already miserable as fuck and I give the kid some pen and paper so I can maybe communicate and see what's on his mind and then I go WAIT A GODDAMN SECOND I KNOW THOSE MONSTERS turns out the kid just had a special interest in Five Nights at Freddy's spookybuttons I pointed at the monster and went "That's Freddy!" and I've never seen a kid that ecstatic in my life the mom looked at me as if her son and I belonged at the same satanic cult and that's why I knew the names of the demons in his head I wrote back to psychologist like "I'm not sure how to explain this but looking up five nights at freddys might bring you progress with this patient" spookybuttons at some point the nurses realized the autistic children and I were like, Really Vibing so they decided to highkey just appoint all of them to my day and it took me almost a month to realize that the fact that I kept arriving and finding that all of today's appointments were autistic children was Not A Coincidence anyway this one time there was a kid who was really into christianity but it was like, specifically angels so I'm trying to start up a conversation with him and I ask what he's reading and he goes "do you know what a nephilim is" and like for one hellish second my soul is suckerpunched out of my body and thrown straight into supernatural-fanfic-on-wattpad hell, and then I reassume control of my flesh prison, ignoring the mental edits of Dean and Castiel making out, and go "Aren't those the guys who are half human and half angel?" and the kid was so fucking happy but the mom was staring at me like why are you privy to this bit of occult jesus lore' and my heathen lesbian of a self just looks at her and goes "i love bible"
